Postnatal depression is a common illness with many effective treatments - what's not effective is telling a sufferer to "snap out of it" - they can't!

It can affect anyone, dads as well as mums, & can occur during pregnancyIf you think you may be affected, don't suffer alone, help is available

Symptoms & experiences of PND

Many of us are generally not good at discussing how we feel and often put on a mask for the benefit of others.  Most new mums feel exhausted, lack confidence and feel guilt & anxiety to some degree.  As many as half experience 'the blues' in the first week after the birth, characterised by feeling tearful and 'coming down to earth with a bump'.  These feelings commonly lift by themselves.

Some mums however may go on to postnatal depression.  This debilitating illness can affect anyone regardless of age, background or experience.  Famous mums are no more immune and suffers include Melinda Messenger, Fern Britton, Katie Price and Judy Finnegan - click below to read some of their and others' experiences

Symptoms

There are a broad range of symptoms associated with PND.  Each sufferer experiences them differently and few experience all of them at any one time, but they may include:

 - Feeling despondent & hopeless

 - Tired & lethargic

 - Anxious & tense - not wanting to see visitors or go out

 - Panic & confusion - unable to calm down

 - Obsessional & inappropriate thoughts.

 - Fearful of harming the baby

 - Unable to concentrate & poor memory

 - Insomnia or nightmares

 - Loss of libido

See the  Postnatal Depression Leaflet from the Association for Postnatal Depression for a more in depth list of symptoms

The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale is widely used to screen for PND - click here to link to it

Puerperal Psychosis

Puerperal psychosis is the most severe and rare type of PND, affecting 1 in every 1000 deliveries.  Treatment is usually a combination of medication and therapy and sufferers may well require some time in Hospital. The following organisations offer help & support

Healthcare professionals

If you need help - make an appointment to visit your doctor or health visitor.  Many women are ashamed or frightened by the symptoms they are experiencing and wary of being judged.  These symptoms are well recognised and not shocking to healthcare professionals, they will not judge you

Mother's Voice website has a useful downloads page which includes a letter to give to your doctor if you find this easier initially than talking

Home-Start

Hereford is extremely fortunate to have a local branch of Home-Start - a national charity that supports parents with young children.  Volunteers with parenting experience visit families in their own home to offer support, friendship & practical assistance.

Support is free, confidential & non-judgemental and it's open to everyone. View the Hereford branch details

Talk to others

Many new mums feel lonely, isolated & lack confidence in themselves faced with the challenges of being a new parent - you are not the only one!

Depression can heighten these feelings - talking to others and realising they feel the same can help.  Be gentle with yourself, depression can sap you of your energy & resolve.  If you feel that you can, try one of the following:

Post a message on our Find a friend board.  Exchange e-mails and maybe arrange to meet up - there are lots of mums in Hereford who would would love a coffee & a chat!

Post a message on herefordmums Forum to seek advice from other mums or try the following links to forums and e-groups discussing PND:

Click on the ITV link and type 'postnatal depression' in the search box

 - itv.com forum

 - Mother's Voice forum

Search our listings for a Toddler group, they are not just for toddlers but for babies from birth too.  Try to ignore that horrible 'new girl at school feeling' that most of us have experienced and go anyway - many have volunteers who can introduce you to a friendly mum!

The Hypnotherapy Directory team is passionate about increasing awareness of the positive benefits hypnotherapy can achieve.

We have seen and experienced first hand how important support for emotional issues can be. Our partner website, Counselling Directory, was launched when a close friend of ours only had access to limited information at a time when they desperately needed emotional support. Counselling Directory provides everything we wish we’d had access to in our times of need. We believe Hypnotherapy Directory extends this help to those seeking alternative methods of treatment

Start a support group

The Meet a Mum Association was founded by Esther Rantzen after her experience of postnatal depression. One of the key services of MAMA is to put mums in touch with other mums directly.

MAMA can also help you if you wish to start a support group and has produced a starter pack with useful tips.  This is available to buy on their website for a small fee or contact them for more information.
